One of the most notable aspects of this venue for me is that there are so many photo opportunities both indoors and out regardless of the weather. When renovating the barns the owners, Mariella and William Fleming had all weather weddings in mind so that come rain or shine, they are passionate about creating the most sensational, memorable experience for you and your guests.
Set on a working farm in the stunning Sussex countryside, this lovingly restored barn complex is my most local venue and features a magnificent 200-year-old Threshing Barn, which oozes rustic charm with exposed authentic wooden beams and iron wrought chandeliers – this, combined with stylish contemporary touches chosen by Mariella herself! The barn is a blank canvas so you can decorate it to suit your theme or leave it naturally gorgeous with its’ rustic features. It can accommodate up to 150 for a sit-down meal which is catered for by the amazingly talented team at Field & Fork, who’s food I can vouch for is delicious.

The Milking Parlour is a calm and luxurious bridal suite, which is located in its own private courtyard – the secret garden. Once used as a dairy parlour it has now been renovated with contemporary interiors complete with driftwood mirrors, lavish rugs, log fire, and again a lot of natural light, ideal for a make-up artist and photographer. The suite can be used as the groom’s quarters or for the bride and her bridesmaids to get ready in before the wedding ceremony. Couples can also use the suite to have a little privacy throughout the day and are welcome to stay the night if they should wish. The outdoor photo opportunities are endless, the barns are surrounded by attractive landscaped gardens, beautiful sunsets over the South Downs and tranquil hideaways, providing an idyllic backdrop for couple portraits. While the picturesque courtyard that lies at the heart of the venue, with its luscious lawn, well-kept pots, rustic milk churns and Cornish slate patio lined with dairy inspired milk churns – is the perfect spot for family formals and for mingling with guests over drinks and canapés.

During the evening there’s a romantic ambience with romantic up-lights, fairy lights and twinkling lanterns. Topping it off with the relaxing fire-lit Collecting Yard with sumptuous sofas, warm throws, outdoor fire heaters and toasted marshmallows to enjoy a truly magical evening setting.
For December weddings, the Threshing Barn comes complete with a stunning 12ft Christmas Tree, decorated with fairy lights and exquisite decorations making it the perfect setting for your Winter Wedding. And if it rains, the staff are outside hoovering up puddles before your guests arrive, as well as providing an abundance of umbrellas and blankets to help keep you all warm and dry. They even arrange a wall of umbrellas to safely transport the bride on her short walk to the ceremony barn without the risk of getting wet. To top this off you and your guests can enter the chilly evening out by the warm fire-pits with a glass of mulled wine or my personal favourite, Winter Pimms, amongst lavish sheepskin rugs and glowing lanterns.

Be sure to pay a visit to the incredible Southend Barns Wedding venue, you may even meet their resident dog Marmite and their Alpacas. Find more information on the Southend Barns website here

The Ceremony takes place in the Dairy Barn, which is fully licensed for all civil ceremonies and partnerships. With a heavenly 22 metre aisle and handmade sweet chestnut benches that can hold up to 140 guests, 120 seated, and these are positioned like church pews, I can honestly say it’s one of the only ceremony rooms that has a Church feel to it. It also oozes natural light which floods in through the windows and reflects off the white walls – perfect for beautiful candid photos without the need for a flash and makes for an idyllic setting for couples to exchange their vows, even being used after the wedding ceremony for a drinks reception or transformed into an entertainment room for the children. In wet and cold weather I have taken many formal group photos in here and even romantic Bride & Groom portraits as you’ll see in my gallery.

Located just half a mile up the road from Southend Barns is The Blacksmiths pub, sharing the same owners and also restored in a relaxed and comfortable style with a few quirky twists, guests are able to enjoy the blazing fire and homely charm of the anvil bar or the snug elegance of the dining room. There are also three uniquely furnished double bedrooms and a large garden area with outdoor seating, fire pits and its own herb and salad garden.

The staff here can also organise pre-wedding breakfasts or drinks for the bridal

party or why not extend the celebrations into the next day with a delicious brunch with family and friends.

The Blacksmiths is ideally located to provide an ideal meeting point for wedding guests as well as overnight accommodation.

On many occasions I have sent my second photographer here in the morning to photograph the Groom and his groomsmen, family and friends have pre-wedding drinks or even getting ready for the big day. I have also photographed the girls getting ready here and even a wedding reception here after a Southend Barns ceremony and even a blessing on the beautiful landscape here at The Blacksmiths, as well as bridal prep in their spectacular light bedrooms, perfect for my style of natural light photography.

There are some beautiful beach houses to hire in the Witterings perfect for prep photos and you can then make the most of the scenic backdrop of the sea. There's no need to worry about beach-traffic as you'll be heading out in the opposite direction. Why not make it a Wedfest - whole weekend with family and friends at the beach together before or after your Wedding Day.

The sand dunes over at West Wittering beach is also an ideal location for a pre-wedding or engagement shoot, or even a Cherish the Dress photo session after your wedding day - a fab excuse to wear your dress again and get through those wedding blues!

There's also some beautiful Churches for religious ceremonies all around the Witterings, Birdham and even Chichester or Arundel Cathedral.

With Southend Barns being so popular sometimes you may not be able to access the venue including the bridal suite until 11am, therefore Brides often start their bridal prep at The Blacksmiths. If you have an earlier ceremony and you are choosing to get ready elsewhere entirely so there's no need for moving around mid-prep, I strongly recommend hiring a light airy room somewhere with lots of natural light and neutral colours to make the most of your bridal prep photos. In this instance the Groom and his Groomsmen often use the Milking Parlour at Southend Barns to get ready - definitely worth booking a second photographer for this - just see the photos below.

This is an honest list of suppliers that I simply adore. I have been in this industry a long time and have worked with the very best of suppliers over the years. I don’t have a recommendation list where people pay me to recommend them or where I earn a percentage, I don’t believe that makes an honest list and if I were getting married I would be upset to know my suppliers were only recommending other suppliers to me because they were making money from it, rather than because they genuinely think they’re just fab at their job.
These suppliers I have listed below are ones whose services I would happily hire for my own wedding day (if I wasn’t getting married overseas), and who I think produce the most beautiful and highest of quality wedding attire. They are professional, friendly, reliable and above all, amazing at what they do!
